Choose something easy to reach

Use a notebook, a note on your phone or a dream journal app that feels convenient after waking. At first, simply write what you remember. Polished writing, a clear timeline and a complete plot are optional.

If only a blue door and a familiar voice remain, start there. Do not fill in gaps to make a better story. “I may have been in a garden” is a useful way to preserve uncertainty.

A simple dream journal template

Date: When did I wake?

Title: What short name fits this dream?

Memory: What happened, or what image stayed?

Feeling: How did I feel during and after it?

Themes: Which people, places or objects appeared?

Uncertainty: Which details are unclear?

Question: What would I like to revisit?

You do not need to complete every line. A date, one remembered detail and a feeling can be enough on a busy morning.

An example of a short entry

“15 October — The wandering lift. I was looking for my hotel room, but the lift kept taking me to different floors. At first I was annoyed, then curious. I may have had a suitcase. Question: when did my feeling change?”

This invented entry keeps the scene and emotional shift while marking an uncertain detail. It does not need a conclusion before you can save it.

What if you cannot remember a dream?

“I do not remember a dream today” is a valid entry. If a mood remains, note it separately without turning it into a story afterwards.

The NINDS sleep overview explains that much of our dreaming is not remembered. Not recalling a dream does not establish that you did not dream. There is no need to interrupt your sleep with alarms for the sake of a journal.

Review your entries at your own pace

Pick a quiet moment to read a few entries. Mark a small number of recurring details, such as an old home, travel, water or searching. Notice feelings too: very different stories may both end in relief.

Separate observation from interpretation. “I was searching for something in three dreams” is an observation. “Does uncertainty matter to me at the moment?” is a possible question. The question is not a proven explanation.

Digital journals and personal details

In the Álomtérkép app you can keep a private dream journal and choose separately whether to share a dream anonymously on the map. Names, addresses or identifying details inside the text can still be personal even when your account name is hidden.

When you request an interpretation, the dream text is processed by OpenAI. Review your text before submitting or sharing it. See the privacy policy for details.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to write every day?

No. Choose a rhythm that suits your mornings. Short or occasional entries can still preserve details you care about.

Is paper or an app better?

Choose the tool you enjoy using. A notebook is simple; a digital journal can help organise entries for later reading.
